The interesting part is what happens when those monthly investments are allowed to grow over time.
That is where a SIP calculator becomes useful.
Instead of trying to calculate dozens or hundreds of individual monthly investments manually, you can estimate how your investment might grow based on the amount, duration and expected rate of return.
What is a SIP?
SIP stands for Systematic Investment Plan.
Rather than investing a large amount at once, you invest a fixed amount at regular intervals, usually every month, into a mutual fund or another eligible investment.
For example, you might invest:
Monthly SIP: ₹5,000
Duration: 10 years
Total instalments: 120
Total amount invested: ₹6,00,000

How does a SIP calculator work?
A SIP calculator estimates the future value of a series of regular investments.
It normally asks for three main values:
- Monthly investment amount
- Investment duration
- Expected annual rate of return
The calculator then estimates the future value of all your monthly contributions.
This is slightly different from calculating the growth of a one-time investment because every SIP instalment is invested for a different length of time.
Your first ₹5,000 contribution may remain invested for almost the entire period.

It can be useful when you expect your income and ability to invest to increase over time.

All three matter, but they affect the result differently.
Increasing your SIP amount means more of your own money is being invested.

Ask:

Do not ignore inflation
₹50 lakh today and ₹50 lakh twenty years from now do not have the same purchasing power.

It is tempting to enter a large monthly SIP and an aggressive expected return because the final number looks good.
A more useful calculation starts with realistic assumptions.
Enter an amount you could consistently invest. Try several return scenarios. Compare different durations. Experiment with an annual step-up if your income is likely to increase.
A SIP calculator cannot predict your financial future.
But it can make the relationship between money, time and potential growth much easier to understand.
And sometimes seeing those numbers clearly is enough to turn a vague goal into an actual plan.
